Fluoride decision to force resident to leave

A fluoride-intolerant man from Wodonga, in north-east Victoria, says he will be forced to move house when the chemical is added to the city's water.

Last month, it was announced fluoride would soon be put into Wodonga and Wangaratta's supply.Andrew Shadbolt says he breaks out in eczema and headaches when he has contact with the chemical. The teacher says it took him a year-and-a-half of tests to discover his intolerance.

"It pretty much means I have to leave because you can't filter it out easily, not from mains supply anyway, you can just from drinking, but not from mains, but because I still get affected it's pretty hard," he said. "I could get tank water but you never get enough rain here, it pretty much means I'd have to leave."

The cost of no cavities: With Legislature considering fluoride mandate, health questions linger

Is fluoridated water good for you? Or is it a poison that causes young boys to die of bone cancer?

For 60 years, U.S. cities and towns have been adding fluoride to tap water, and for 60 years pro-fluoride advocates have been unable to forge a scientific consensus in favor of the practice. Those who say fluoridation is harmful are often portrayed as crackpots scanning the heavens for UFOs. Yet the opponents of fluoridation include a winner of the Nobel prize in medicine, one of Canada's top dental researchers and 11 unions that represent 7,000 environmental and public health professionals at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

Dangerous flouride?
By Jon Brodkin

A Natick chemist whose research has linked fluoridated water to elevated levels of lead in children's blood is trying to convince state lawmakers to defeat a proposal that would mandate fluoridation of most public water supplies.

About 30 lawmakers are trying to require adding fluoride to water supplies that serve at least 5,000 people. Dental groups and many public health agencies, including the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, promote fluoridating tap water because they say it prevents tooth decay.

Some Young Children Get Too Much Fluoride In Caring for Teeth
Tara Parker-Pope
December 21, 1998

THE FLUORIDATION of public water systems in the U.S. since 1945 is often hailed as one of the great public-health advances of the century. Today, many children reach adulthood without a single cavity. [NOTE: Almost every mass-media article starts out with this same mantra..]

But now health researchers are questioning whether Americans, particularly children, may have too much fluoride in their diets. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control just completed a study, to be published early next year, showing that children are exposed to fluoride from a variety of sources, including drinking water, toothpaste, fluoride supplements and even grape juice. "There probably is excess exposure," says Kit Shaddix, fluoride team leader at the CDC's division of oral health.

Don't Drink the Water?

Brush your teeth, but the fluoride from your tap may not do much good - and may cause cancer.
excerpts from the Newsweek article (2/5/90)

Remember the great fluoride debate? Back in the 1950s, every voice of authority, from the U.S. Public Health Service to the PTA, supported adding fluoride to the water supply as an effective and totally safe way to promote healthy teeth... The most incendiary results come from the National Toxicology Program (NTP), which in 1977 was ordered by Congress to determine whether fluoride causes cancer. This week NTP plans to release data showing that lab rats given fluoridated water had a higher rate of a rare bone cancer called osteosarcoma. According to a memo by the Environmental Protection Agency, "very preliminary data from recent health studies ... indicate that fluoride may be a carcinogen."
